my first pregnancy scan

Finding out you are pregnant is an exciting and emotional moment. After seeing that positive pregnancy test, you may immediately find yourself asking questions such as “I’m pregnant, what do I do now?”, “When should I have my first scan?” or “When should I book an early pregnancy scan?”

For many expectant parents, an early scan is one of the first milestones of pregnancy. At HerView Ultrasound, we offer early viability scans from 5 weeks of pregnancy to help confirm a pregnancy. From around 6 to 7 weeks onwards, you will begin to see more development of the baby.

Can I Have a Pregnancy Scan at 5 Weeks?

Yes. At HerView Ultrasound, an early viability scan can be booked from 5 weeks to confirm a pregnancy.

At this very early stage, the pregnancy is still developing, and what can be seen on the scan will depend on exactly how far along you are. Pregnancy dating is generally based on the first day of your last menstrual period, but this may not always reflect the exact stage of development, particularly if your cycle is irregular or ovulation occurred later than expected.

For this reason, if you attend for an early pregnancy scan and the pregnancy is earlier than expected, you may be advised to return for a follow-up scan at a later date.

What Can I Expect From My First Pregnancy Scan?

Your first pregnancy scan will depend on how many weeks pregnant you are.

From 5 weeks, an early viability scan can help to confirm a pregnancy. As the pregnancy continues to develop, more can be seen on ultrasound.

From approximately 6 to 7 weeks onwards, you will begin to see the development of a baby. This can be an incredibly special milestone for expectant parents, particularly after the excitement and uncertainty of those first few weeks.

As pregnancy progresses, the ultrasound can provide more information about the developing pregnancy.

I’m Pregnant – What Do I Do Now?

After receiving a positive pregnancy test, one of the first things you should do is contact your GP or maternity care provider to begin arranging your antenatal care.

You may also wish to book an early pregnancy scan for reassurance and to learn more about how your pregnancy is progressing.

An early scan at HerView Ultrasound does not replace your routine maternity or hospital care. However, it can provide an opportunity to confirm your pregnancy and see the early stages of development before your routine maternity scans.

When Is the Best Time to Book My First Scan?

The best time to book your first pregnancy scan depends on what you are hoping to see.

If you would like an early viability scan to confirm a pregnancy, you can book from 5 weeks at HerView Ultrasound.

If you would like to see more development of your baby, waiting until around 6 to 7 weeks onwards may allow you to see more during your ultrasound appointment.

If you are unsure how many weeks pregnant you are, our team can help you decide when may be the most suitable time to book your scan based on the date of your last menstrual period and the information available to you.
